Five tools every beginner sewist actually needs

When I started sewing, I thought I needed every notion in the shop. Ten years later, my most-used tools still fit in one small basket.

Start with a good pair of fabric scissors and never, ever cut paper with them. Add a seam ripper — you will use it more than you expect, and that is a sign you are learning, not failing.

Round it out with glass-head pins, a clear ruler, and a decent iron. Pressing as you go is the single biggest difference between homemade and handmade.
